Newington

Coach: Adam Wilkinson (2nd year)

Last year: 10-6-2, lost in 2nd round of Class LL tournament

Key losses: Brooke Hellman, Caitlin Johnson

Key returnees: Taylor Lozada (jr. F), Mackenzie Luiz (jr. F) Grace Ancona (sr. D).

Outlook: Adam Wilkinson is not shy. He does not adhere to the tradition of being close to the vest with his feelings. He thinks the Indians will be good and has no problem saying so.

“Going forward we don’t have any problems. We won’t have an issues going forward,” Wilkinson said. “We’re frighteningly quick and frighteningly talented going forward.”

With star forwards like Taylor Lozada and Mackenzie Luiz, a pair of juniors with speed and skill, Wilkinson has reason to boast about his club. The Indians have scored six goals in two scrimmages and have the core of their team returning. Making up for the loss of Hellman will be a challenge, but the main point of emphasis for the Indians will be making sure they don’t play too fast.

“We just have to find a balance between being gung ho about going forward and not being in shootouts every game,” Wilkinson said.

He doesn’t mean the kind that comes after extra time, either. If the Indians can avoid finding themselves in 5-4 games every day, this season has every chance to be a good one. If the defense doesn’t produce, however, the goal scoring which seems like such a luxury could wind up being a necessity.

“Talent wise we have the players on defense, we just have to define roles,” Wilkinson said. “That’s what I get paid for.”
