Coach: Adam Wilkinson (1st year)

Last year: 11-5-2, Lost in second round of Class LL tournament

Key losses: Meghan Gustufson, Bridget Makles, Jalen Middlebrooks

Key returnees: Brooke Hellman sr. Caitlin Johnson sr., Mackenzie Luiz soph., Kaila Lozada soph., Grace Ancona jr., Julianna Santos jr.

Outlook: The Indians are talented but very young. Wilkinson has plenty of coaching experience, including a stint as an assistant on a Farmington state title team, but this is his first crack as a high school head coach. His team is even greener. Newington suffered a big loss when Brianna Boyko went down for the year with an ACL injury, leaving the team particularly young in the middle. Santos is a junior with experience and will lead that group. On defense the Indians are led by Johnson and Ancona but will need young players to emerge. Newington should be able to score, however, with Lozada and Luiz providing speed and Brooke Hellman a scoring touch. Hellman’s sister Karli will serve as the center defender as only a freshman, but Wilkinson thinks his team’s talent will overcome its youth. The key will be its ability to stand up to a whole season of varsity physicality, which will be new to many players.
